{pretty, happy, funny, real}--Good Friday and Easter Baking

Capturing the contentment of every day life, every Thursday at Like Mother, Like Daughter.

For the past few  years I have been wanting to make hot cross buns for Good Friday and this year I finally did. This makes me happy. I took the recipe out of the back of a children's book about Easter that I had.  I liked the recipe because I had all the ingredients on hand.  (I don't have the book on hand at this moment so unfortunately I can't type out the recipe for you.) I used strips of dough made out of flour and water for the crosses instead of frosting to keep with the penitential spirit as suggested at Catholic Cuisine.  These were delicious and I am positive that frosting would be wonderful on these.  Perhaps I will try making some more with frosting before Easter is over.

(Look, in the back you can see I replaced my blinds with curtains. I don't think I particularly like those curtains but I am happy that we finally got rid of the hard to keep clean blinds and put a curtain rod up.)

This Easter Nest Bread from Catholic Cuisine is another thing that I have been seeing over the years.  This year I was inspired to try it and it was really delicious. It is apparently a St. Lucia Bread recipe and uses orange peel in the bread and orange juice in the icing for a wonderful orangely flavor. I thought it was very pretty and was very happy with how it turned out.  Aren't my blue plates a lovely compliement to the colorful Easter Eggs in the middle?

My brother stayed over night with us and ate breakfast with us in the morning which made the morning even more special: to be able to share with someone outside our immediately family.
